Must read for anyone thinking about joining the military, or who cares about the men fighting for ou
If you are thinking about joining the military read this book first because you might change your mind when you find out the level of medical care that is provided to our soldiers- the people we call heros, but treat worse than dogs and criminals.
On a lighter note Dr Charlie's story is captivating. You will feel as if you woke up one day and were in the military in Iraq, because that's what happened to Dr Charlie. Keep in mind this is a guy who carries a gun in certain circumstances (when he is requied to do so), but never loads the gun because he has no intention of shooting anyone. Dr Charlie is the "Stranger in a Strange Land" of the 21st century.
The usual reaction for anyone who serves in the military and sees our soldiers being killed and mamed by road side bombs is to want to react violently and in revenge. Dr. Charlie actually says that he wants to go off the base and try to treat local children- which does not happen for many reasons.
The book is actually many short stories- ranging in length from a paragraph to a few pages long, so it is a very quick and easy read. This makes it a great gift to give to someone like a teenager or senior citizen who might not be inclined to sit down and read an entire book. Any part of this book that they read will give you some important information and insight into life in the military.
Lastly, everyone I know says they support the troops, no matter what their view is on the war. The question to ask yourself is- What have you done lately to support the troops? I suspect not very much. Well the proftis from this book goes to support families of soldiers, so this is your chance to make a small contribution.
This is the 21 century's "Red Badge of Courage". What an inspiration!
Dr. Garbarino is our Patch Adams and our hero! He has been there for our three sons. Dr. Charlie has been a calming influence on the many emergencies and illnesses 3 boys can have. He is a true advocate of children and has our trust and respect for teaching us to be the best we can be.
What we did not know was that this incredibly busy and accomplished man was also an author, who can expose the human side of a war. This is the modern equivalent of the classic book ?A Red Badge of Courage?.
Martin Luther King, Jr. said that we begin to die the day we remain silent about things that truly matter. Dr. Charlie will not remain silent and is giving those who can?t a clear and powerful voice. We all need more ?Dr.Charlies? in our lives. The inspiring stories change our mood and help our desire to serve our community.
